Masdar City: World's first fully sustainable, zero-carbon, zero-waste and eco-friendly green city

The first phase of Masdar City – an 18 billion Euro eco-project will be fully completed in 2015. The gigantic development is situated on the outskirts of Abu Dhabi. Being fully pre-planned and self-contained, Masdar City will be the world's first carbon neutral (zero-carbon(, waste-neutral (zero-waste) and entirely sustainable green eco-city. A wide range of eco-friendly, green technologies are being utilized including the largest solar power-plant in the world, wind-farms, rooftop photo-voltaics, geothermal sources and a hydrogen power-plant. The city's water needs are fulfilled by a solar-powered desalination plant and there are extensive recycling systems as well.

At first, Masdar City will be home to come 7 thousand residents and around 15 thousand commuters. Masdar City's commercial sector will primarily be concerned with the development and manufacturing of environmentally-friendly products and services. Cars will be banned from the start, residents use integrated forms of mass transit and personal rapid transit methods instea. Masdar City will be connected to the rest of Abu Dhabi through speed-rail. It will host a university, institute of science and technology and will have the headquarters of the International Renewable Energy Agency.
